The Medieval Castle

The Medieval Castle is located in the heart of Limassol's historic centre, which today houses the Medieval Collection of the Cyprus Museum. 
The exact date of the construction of the castle is unknown. Textbooks suggest that it was built in 1193 by the founder of the Lusignan dynasty, but the first official reference to the castle dates back in 1228.

The castle many invaders throughout its storied history. The castle in its current form takes us back to the Ottoman period (1590 AD). It had several uses over the centuries, and today it houses a very important medieval collection.

Its fortification walls are also of great archaeological interest and are believed to have been pieces of a much larger castle.
